How the Hours Calculator Works

The Hours Calculator finds the total time between clock-in and clock-out, then subtracts unpaid lunch or break time to show your net hours worked. Results are shown in both decimal hours (such as 7.50) and HH:MM format. This makes it useful for payroll records, shift planning, and checking whether your timesheet matches your actual hours.

Use the weekly timesheet section to total hours across the full week. Enter start time, end time, and break time for each day, and the calculator will show both daily hours and the weekly total. If you need a payroll-style weekly breakdown with overtime and pay, use the time card calculator. For adding up multiple shifts or weekly logs, see our related guides on how to calculate work hours and how to track work hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are work hours calculated?
Work hours are calculated by finding the difference between clock-out and clock-in times, then subtracting the break duration. For example, clocking in at 9:00 and out at 17:00 with a 60-minute break gives 7.00 hours worked.
Does it handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time, the calculator assumes the shift crosses midnight and calculates accordingly. For example, 22:00 to 06:00 = 8.00 hours.
What is the difference between decimal hours and HH:MM?
Decimal hours express time as a number (e.g., 7.50 hours means 7 hours and 30 minutes). HH:MM format shows the same value as 07:30. Decimal hours are commonly used for payroll calculations.
Can I track a full week of hours?
Yes. Use the weekly timesheet section to enter clock-in, clock-out, and break times for each day of the week (Monday through Sunday). The calculator shows daily totals and an overall weekly total.
