How Fraction Calculations Work
A fraction represents a part of a whole, written as a numerator over a denominator (e.g., 3/4). The numerator tells how many parts you have, and the denominator tells how many equal parts make up the whole. Fractions are fundamental in math, cooking, construction, and everyday measurements.
To add or subtract fractions, you first need a common denominator. Multiply each fraction's numerator and denominator so both denominators match, then add or subtract the numerators. For multiplication, simply multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. For division, flip the second fraction (reciprocal) and multiply.
A mixed number combines a whole number with a fraction (e.g., 2 3/4). To calculate with mixed numbers, first convert them to improper fractions: multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and place the result over the original denominator. After calculating, you can convert back to a mixed number by dividing the numerator by the denominator.
