How the Beer BAC Calculator Works

This calculator converts your beer consumption into standard drinks using the Widmark formula. Each beer is converted based on its size (in ounces) and ABV% to calculate the total pure alcohol consumed.

For example, a standard 12 oz beer at 5% ABV contains 0.6 oz of pure alcohol — exactly one standard drink. A 16 oz pint of IPA at 6.5% ABV contains about 1.04 oz of pure alcohol — nearly two standard drinks.

Your body eliminates alcohol at about 0.015% BAC per hour. The calculator accounts for your weight, biological sex, and time elapsed to give you an accurate BAC estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many beers does it take to reach the legal limit?
It varies by body weight and gender. For an average 170 lb male, roughly 3-4 standard 12 oz beers (5% ABV) consumed in one hour would bring BAC close to 0.08%. A 130 lb female may reach this limit with just 2-3 beers.
Does beer get you less drunk than liquor?
Alcohol is alcohol regardless of its source. What matters is the total amount of pure alcohol consumed. A 12 oz beer at 5% ABV contains the same alcohol as a 1.5 oz shot of 40% spirits — both are one standard drink.
How long after drinking beer can I drive?
Your body metabolizes alcohol at about 0.015% BAC per hour. Use this calculator to estimate your BAC and time to sober. However, never rely solely on a calculator — when in doubt, do not drive.
Does craft beer raise BAC faster than regular beer?
Yes. Craft beers and IPAs often have 6-10% ABV compared to 4-5% for regular beers, meaning each beer contains significantly more alcohol. A single 16 oz craft IPA at 8% ABV contains the equivalent of about 2 standard drinks.
